Jillian's Mission

Hi I'm Jillian Sharpe.

I have lived in Boulder for five years while attending the University
of Colorado.  I will graduate this May with a degree in Political Science
and a minor in Ethnic Studies.  My long term plans are to attend law
school (I am taking the LSAT this June) but my plans for the next
year are to volunteer.

I will be going to Johannesburg, South Africa (assuming I raise the money!)
this July and staying for a year.  While there, I will be volunteering my time
(40hrs/week) with an NGO that addresses either community development,
education or human rights law.  My placement will be determined upon arrival -
I will have to interview first.  The placement I mentioned specifically that I
want is the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which looks at policy and how it
affects rural school children. 
 
For this trip, I need to raise around $6,000.  The program fee is $5,700. 
This fee covers the cost of housing, visa fees, health care and a
$50 stipend/month.  Food and travel expenses are not covered.  I currently
have saved up about $3,000, but that leaves 2,700, plus a flight
(a little upwards of $2,000) and extra money for food for the year. 

This is a huge (HUGE) dream of mine - to not just be a tourist and visit an
African country, but to live there, get to know the people and offer up my time
and talents and lend a helping hand to others who are trying to solve
some pretty heavy problems.  There is no possible way I will be able to afford
this trip on my own - I truly need all the help I can get!
